abstract |
A system for the transport of liquefied natural gas from a producer to a consumer uses liquid nitrogen for the supercooling of liquefied natural gas in a heat exchanger before it reaches the final storage tanks. The supercooled natural gas is transferred from tanks on vehicles (oil tankers or road vehicles) to the storage tanks at the consumer's either by pumps or by an excess pressure of nitrogen. This greatly reduces the production of flash gas in the storage tanks and during transport. Contact of the still existing gas in the storage tank with the supercooled gas re-liquefies it; the losses of gaseous natural gas in the storage tanks are greatly diminised. The empty cargo tanks of an oil tanker can now be kept filled with nitrogen so that the risk of an explosion is avoided. |
