abstract Hermetically sealed furnace for melting metals, where a metal casing with a refractory lining forms a melting chamber (I) with a refractory roof in a metal cover. (I) has a launder for tapping the metal, and a door for removing slag and repairing the lining. At least one vertical electrode passes through the roof into (I) and is used with an electrode in the base of (I) to create an arc or a plasma arc. In the roof and cover is a hole closed by a sliding shutter; and above the cover is a table which can be driven horizontally to move any one of three devices over the hole and form a seal. The three devices are mounted on the upper side of the table and consist of (a) a hopper for adding materials to the furnace; (b) a pyrometer; and (c) a lance for removing samples from the melt in the furnace. The desired furnace atmos. can be maintained even when using devices (c, d, e).
