mfr. involves melting S, vapourisation in a bubble layer and oxidn. of the S vapour formed. The vapourisation is effected by bubbling O2 through the molten S, whilst oxidn. is carried out in a fluidised bef of inert material. Pref. the O2 is bubbled through the molten S at its b.pt. and vapourisation and oxidn. are carried out at 1-35 atm. Pref. quartz sand, silica gel or aluminosilicate is used as inert material. Up to 100 vol% SO2 can be produced the process is 1.5-3 times more intensive than usual and the effect of high temps. on units of the furnace under high pressure conditions is avoided. |
