A series of chords, made up from bundles of planks, with intervening pressure struts and tension bars, are incorporated in the self-supporting scaffolding for arched load-bearing structures, esp. solid arched bridges. The struts are mounted in steel shoes on both sides, and the two chords in a storey are clamped together with turnbuckles. Both the inclined tension bars and the axes of the inclined pressure struts intersect in the nodal points of the static system of the lattice structure being erected. Double wedges for centering, may be fitted between the steel shoes. This prevents occurrence of any significant additional stresses, for structures of any height and considerable span width. |
