METHOD FOR OBTAINING BITUMEN FROM TEAR SAND |
abstract |
Tar sand is treated to extract bitumen with a hot. aq. fluid contg. an amine of formula R1R2NR3 (I) (in which R1 and R2 are H or 1-6C alkyl; R3 is 3-20C alkyl or- R4NH2; R4 is 2-18C alkylene; the total of C atoms in R1R2 and R3 is 3-20). The bitumen is not emulsified and no foaming occurs, so that it is effectively separated from the sand and remains in a separate phase. The tar sand can be treated in situ, or on the surface e.g. after excavation by strip mining. The process is suitable for treatment of deposits at medium depth, where the rock cover is not thick enough for high pressure fluid injection and too thick for economic open-cast mining. |
