POLYMER SURFACES FOR BLOOD CONTACTING SURFACES OF A BIOMEDICAL DEVICE AND METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION THEREOF |
abstract |
Process comprises (a) thoroughly dispersing no more than 5 vol. % of a polymer additive (I) throughout at least 95 vol.% of a base polymer (II), (I) and (II) being in fluid form and (b) solidifying the polymer mixt. to form the surface. (I) comprises (i) a first homopolymer chain component chemically bonded to (ii) a second homopolymer chain component of a different type. The additive has a lower surface free energy characterised by Zisman's critical surface tension (gamma.c) than the polymer (II). The polymer mixt. has a gamma.c value of 10-35 dyne/cm. Pref. component (i) has a gamma.c value of below 30 dyne/cm. and tends to exudate whereas (ii) lowers this tendency. (I) lowers the gamma.c value of (II) to render it blood compatible. Biomedical devices include auxiliary ventricles, intra-aortic balloons and blood pumps. |
