A process for the substantial removal of calcium and/or other divalent ions from brines containing high levels of another ion(s) which comprises treating the brine for at least 5 minutes under alkaline conditions with an ion exchanger which is a hydrous oxide or a material forming a hydrous oxide under the alkaline conditions, or a metal selected from zirconium, titanium, tin, molybdenum, tungsten, thorium, niobium, tantalum, and chromium, and mixed hydrous oxides of these aforementioned metals. Calcium, Magnesium, Strontium and Barium are specified as di-valent ions. |
