titleOfInvention MIXTURE FOR GLASS PRODUCTION AND METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION THEREOF
abstract Batches for glassmaking comprise principally quartz, soda and calcium carbonate. Of the batch constituents, soda represents the largest cost factor. The novel batch is intended to be significantly less expensive. In the novel batch, at least some of the soda is replaced by sodium hydroxide solution in a concentration of from 10 to 30% by weight of sodium hydroxide in water. Such sodium hydroxide solution is formed in plastics production as a waste product which has hitherto been dumped. In order to prepare the new batch, the dry constituents of the batch are premixed, and the sodium hydroxide solution is added just before the batch is introduced into a glass melting furnace. The novel batch is suitable for the production of conventional glasses, for example for bottles or window panes.
