Security element in the form of a thread or strip for embedding in securities such as banknotes, cheques, securities (shares, stocks, bonds), identity cards, credit cards, or the like having characters, patterns, etc. which can be seen using transmitted light and read visually and/or are machine-readable. The security element consists of a light-transparent plastic film which has an opaque coating, extending over the element, which has cutouts in the shape of the characters and patterns to be incorporated. In addition, the security element has in areas which are congruent to the cutouts chromophoric and/or luminescing substances which, under suitable lighting conditions, cause the characters and/or patterns to be distinguished in a contrasting fashion in terms of colour from the security and the opaque coating. |
