A wound structure comprises wound Titanium wires 12 and ceramic filaments 10 further wound about each other, and an infilling of the resulting interstices with a metal 16 to provide a dense structure. The structure may be made by winding the wires 12 onto the ceramic filaments 10, winding the resultant structures about each other to make a three-strand structure 14, hot pressing to produce a pre-form e.g. a ring, and filling the interstices with metal 16 by vapour or liquid deposition. The metal 16 may be aluminium, aluminium alloy, magnesium or nickel. <IMAGE> |
