abstract Method of improving the torsional strength of components, esp. crankshafts, having stress raising grooves with bottom corners, whereby only the areas of the groove bottom corners are hardened by laser or electron beam in a stream of oxidn.-preventing protective gas. Process equipment is also claimed. Pref. the beam is of defined cross section and moves over the bottom corner areas of the groove. The equipment has at least two side mounted pref. Nd-YAG laser beams, each directed at one bottom corner. Means of producing a protective gas stream along the groove are provided. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used to improve the dynamic torsional strength of components, esp. crankshafts, with grooves having sharp bottom corners by localised hardening of the corner areas. No post-finishing is required.
