titleOfInvention | METHOD AND DEVICE FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL TREATMENT OF SOLID MATERIALS IN MOLTEN SALT |
abstract | Solid material (MX) (6), containing a solid solution of non-metallic substance (X) in metal or semimetal (M) or a chemical compound of non-metallic substance and metal or semimetal, is immersed in molten salt (MY) (4). To remove part of the non-metallic substance due to electrooxidation, a cathode potential is applied to the material. As the reaction proceeds, it becomes less effective, and therefore, to remove non-metallic substances at its low concentrations, the source (8) of reactive metal (M) is immersed in the molten salt and electronically coupled to the said material either by electronic conductivity through the salt or through an external scheme. The reactions proceed on the aforementioned material, where the non-metallic substance dissolves in the salt, and on a reactive metal that reacts with the non-metallic substance dissolved in the salt to form a reaction product that is more stable than the chemical compound of the non-metallic substance and a metal or semimetal (M). In this way, the non-metallic material is removed from the solid material. |
