A new process for the preparation of 2,3,5 trichloropyridine is described. The process consists in adding trichloroacetaldehyde to acrylonitrile in the presence of a catalyst and then cyclizing the 2,4,4-trichloro-4-formylbutyronitrile formed to give 2,3,5-trichloropyridine with elimination of water.n n n The 2,4,4-trichloro-4-formylbutyronitrile which occurs as an intermediate in the process according to the invention is a new compound. It can be prepared by the addition of trichloroacetaldehyde to acrylonitrile in the presence of a catalyst.n n n The 2,3,5-trichloropyridine can be used as an intermediate for the preparation of herbicidal active ingredients. |
