abstract Transparent polyamides with recurring structural units of the formula in which R 'is the hydrocarbon radical of terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid and R is 60-95 mol% of the divalent hydrocarbon radicals of 5-methylnonamethylenediamine- (1,9) (a), 2,4-dimethyloctanediamine- (1 , 8) (b) and 2,4,6-trimethylheptanediamine (1,7) (c), whose molar ratio a: b: c is between 1: 0: 0 and 0.50: 0.45: 0.05, preferably 1: 1: 0 and 0.80: 0.15: 0.05, is 40-5 mol% from the divalent hydrocarbon radicals of the formulas exists, the polyamides have a glass softening temperature in the temperature range between 125 and 180'C. Up to 10% of the aromatic dicarboxylic acids can be replaced by aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, especially adipic acid.
