Oil-soluble sulfur and boron-containing compositions are useful as lubricating oil additives, especially in lubricants and lubricants containing little or no phosphorus. In one embodiment, the compositions described above comprise (A) at least one ester of metaboric acid having the general formula (I) in which each R is individually a hydrocarbyl group containing approximately from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R in a group RO (R'O) can be hydrogen when n = 0, or else two of the groups R are groups of hydrocarbylenes joined together via a carbon atom of oxygen or nitrogen to form a nucleus, each R ′ is individually an alkene group containing approximately from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and n is between 0 and 7 approximately, and (B) at least one oil-soluble sulfur-containing organic compound. Optionally, the compositions also contain (C) at least one auxiliary corrosion inhibitor and / or (D) at least one oil-soluble detergent / dispersant. |
