3-alkylquinoline derivatives of the general formula in which X is a branched or unbranched alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Y is hydrogen or any radical and Z is -OR, -SR, -NRRʹ, halogen, (-N⁺ (R) ₃) ⁺, -NH-NRRʹ , -COOH or -NHCOR and R and Rʹ may be the same or different and are hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radicals having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, can be easily and with good yield in an acidic, aqueous medium with chlorate ions in the presence of vanadyl (V) cations as a catalyst to 5-alkylquinolinic acids. |
