abstract Method of making an ion exchange material in nwhich a ceramic material is ion-implanted with sulfur, ncarbon, phosphorus, or nitrogen, which is oxidized to nsulfate, carboxylate or carbonate, phosphate, or nitrate, nrespectively, or the nitrogen is reduced to amine or amide. nAlternatively, a mixture of ceramic powder and a binder ncontaining sulfur, carbon, phosphorus or nitrogen is heated nin a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature up to n1000°C. The sulfur is then oxidized to sulfate, the carbon nto carboxylate or carbonate, phosphorus to phosphate, and nnitrogen to nitrate, or the nitrogen is reduced to amine or namide. Also a method of treating acidic aqueous solutions ncontaining dissolved radioactive materials by passing them nthrough an ion exchange column containing the ion exchange nmaterial made by the afore-mentioned methods.
