titleOfInvention Electrode formation
abstract A system (10) and a method useful in the formation of nelectrodes for use in electrochemical cells are disclosed. nThe system includes a pair of conductive metallic terminal nelectrodes (12, 14) spaced apart from one another and disposed in an naqueous electrolyte (16). The terminal electrodes are in nelectrical contact with a power supply (30) to effect a flow of ncurrent in the electrolyte away from the first of the nterminals and toward the second of the terminals. At least none precursor electrode (17) comprising a material to be reduced nor oxidized in electrical contact with a conductive nbackplate is disposed in the electrolyte between the nterminals. The precursor electrode is orientated relative nto the terminal electrodes so as to effect the reduction or noxidation of the material thereof. Restraining forces are napplied to the precursor electrode to substantially maintain nthe dimensions of the precursor electrode during its nreduction/oxidation. The system includes a separator (26) neffective in permitting the precursor and terminal nelectrodes to interface with the electrolyte. The separator npermits a substantially uniform application of the nrestraining forces to the precursor electrode. n No electrical contacts are made directly to the nelectrodes being formed, this process then being a ncontactless charge.
