abstract The powdered polymer according to the invention, based on at least one water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, has a capillary suction capacity under pressure after 20 minutes at least equal to 29 ml / g.n n n This polymer can be prepared by a process consisting in dispersing and suspending an aqueous phase (1) consisting of an aqueous solution of at least one water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, containing an effective amount of at least one crosslinking agent soluble in said phase (1), in an oily phase (2) consisting of at least one aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon having at least 6 carbon atoms and containing an effective amount of at least one surfactant, then to be polymerized said ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomer in the presence of at least one free radical generator, the surfactant being chosen so as to be able to carry out the polymerization with a lower weight ratio from phase (2) to phase (1) or equal to 0.75.n n n Application to the production of articles capable of absorbing aqueous fluids, in particular in the field of hygiene and agriculture.
