| abstract | This invention is concerned with a process for the nchlorination of crosslinked polystyrene and soluble nuncrosslinked polystyrene resins containing segmers of nmethylstyrene or ethylstyrene, said process comprising: n 1) dissolving or suspending a polymer that ncontains segmers of methylstyrene or ethylstyrene in an nappropriate organic solvent; 2) contacting the dissolved or swollen polymer nwith an aqueous solution of an alkaline metal nhypohalite, said solution having a pH of at least 7.0 nbut not more than 10; 3) in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst; 4) at a temperature from 0° to 100°C; and 5) isolating the chloromethylated polystyrene. |
