abstract A process for the preparation of 1-methyl-androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione is described, characterized in that a 3-enol ester or 3-enol ether of the general formula II wherein R₁ represents an alkyl radical with 1-3 carbon atoms or an acyl or trialkylsilyl group with up to 10 carbon atoms in the group, into the 2-bromsteroid of formula III wherein the bromine substituent can be in both the α and the β position, and the compound of the general formula III is converted into 1-methyl-androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione.
