titleOfInvention Azo compound
abstract An optical element, such as a wave guide, having non-linear noptical properties, suitable for use in optical devices in which it nis desirable to alter the characteristics of the light, comprising a ntransparent or reflecting substrate having at least a partial nsuperficial coating comprising alternating monolayers of a first nnon-linear optical (NLO) compound of the formula: n nwherein n    R is an non-hydrophilic aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group ncontaining from 8 to 40 carbon atoms; n    m is 1 or 2; n    R¹ is NO₂, CN or COOR²; n    R² is H or C₁₋₄-alkyl; n    n is from 1 to 4 nand R³ is H, a metal or a group containing a tetravalent N atom and na second NLO compound of the formula: n nwherein T is H, a metal or a group containing a tetravalent N atom; n n    T¹ is NO₂, CN or COOY; n n n    Y is selected from H, C₁₋₄-alkyl, a metal or a group ncontaining a tetravalent N atom; n    T² & T³ are each independently H or a non-hydrophilic aliphatic nor cycloaliphatic group containing up to 30 carbon atoms; n    T⁴ & T⁵ are each independently H or a non-hydrophilic aliphatic nor cycloaliphatic group containing up to 30 carbon atoms; nand T⁶ & T⁷ are each independently H or a non-hydrophilic group ncontaining up to 4 carbon atoms; nor T⁴ & T⁶ together comprise ring fused to Ring A and T⁵ & T⁷ are as nhereinbefore defined; nor T⁵ & T⁷ together comprise ring fused to Ring A and T⁴ & T⁶ are as nhereinbefore defined; nor T² & T⁴ together with the N atom to which T² is attached from a nring fused to Ring A and T³ & T⁵ are as hereinbefore ndefined; nor T³ & T⁵ together with the N atom to which T³ is attached from a nring fused to Ring A and T² & T⁴ are as hereinbefore ndefined; nprovided there are, in total, from 8 to 40 atoms in one or two nof the groups independently represented by T², T³, T⁴ & T⁵.
