titleOfInvention | Process for the production of diphenols |
abstract | A process for the production of dihydric phenols is disclosed which comprises oxidizing diisopropylbenzene (DIPB) with molecular oxygen to obtain a reaction mixture (A) comprising at least diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide (DHP) and diisopropylbenzene monocarbinol monohydroperoxide (HHP), the DIPB, DHP and HHP being optionally substituted; supplying to an agitation reactor (1), an oily phase comprising a solution of the reaction mixture (A) in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, and (2), an aqueous phase comprising hydrogen peroxide and an acid catalyst at a feed rate of 1 - 5 moles of hydrogen peroxide per mole of HHP in the reaction mixture (A), the acid catalyst being present at a concentration in the aqueous phase of 10 - 40% by weight, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous phase being at least 20% by weight, and the weight ratio of the oily phase to the aqueous phase being at least 10:1; allowing the HHP to be oxidised by hydrogen peroxide into the corresponding DHP at a reaction temperature at 30 - 60 DEG C so that a reaction mixture (B) is obtained; separating the aqueous phase from the oily phase in the reaction mixture (B); and subjecting the DHP in the separated oily phase to acid cleavage to form the corresponding, optionally substituted, dihydric phenol. The process represents an improvement over prior art processes in that it allows removal of the reaction water and recirculation of the aromatic hydrocarbon and the aqueous phase to be dispensed with whilst allowing a higher ratio of oily phase to aqueous phase to be achieved. This reduces the amount of hydrogen peroxide and acid catalyst needed, thereby decreasing the reaction time. |
