abstract | Poly[3,3-bis(hydroxymethyloxetane] ("PBHMO") is prepared in high molecular weight (n inh to 5.2) by polymerizing the trimethylsilylether of 3,3-bis (hydroxymethyl)oxetane with i -Bu₃Al-0.7 H₂O cationic catalyst at low temperature, followed by hydrolysis. PBHMO is crystalline, high melting (about 314 o C), highly insoluble and useful in the production of films and fibers. Poly[3-methyl-3- (hydroxymethyl)oxetane] ("PMHMO") and poly [3-ethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane] ("PEHMO") are also prepared in high molecular weight (n inh up to 3.8) by the same procedures. Copolymers of BHMO, MHMO, and EHMO with each other or containing up to about 50% of other oxetanes, oxiranes and tetrahydrofurans; derivatives and alloys from these polymers and copolymers; and methods of preparing the polymers, copolymers, alloys and derivatives into useful films, fibers and articles is described. |
