titleOfInvention Macro-gradient optical density transmissive light concentrators, lenses and compound lenses of large geometry, and fabrication thereof
abstract Gradient optical density transmissive light directing devices (20, 24, 26, 28, 30) nand fabrication thereof are disclosed nherein. Examples of such devices include concentrators, lenses and compound lenses. nThe present invention teaches a proncess for the fabrication of glass light transmitting devices having a chosen gradient nin index of refraction either bidirectionnally (radially and longitudinally relative to an optical axis) or in three dimensions. nThe present invention further describes nthe design of several interesting optical devices by particular choices of the ngradient in the index of refraction thereof. nSuch articles have numerous uses in the optics, optical fiber and solar technology nindustries for the purposes of designing ncompound lens systems using a single, integral lens, coupling light into fibers and nfor concentrating and directing light nfrom a source having a significant angular variation to energy collecting and/or nconversion devices such as a photovoltaic ncell, to name but a few applications.
