abstract Concentrated aqueous alkaline solutions containing about 10 weight percent or more of a water soluble alkaline reagent such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, etc. are admixed with aqueous granular starch slurries without pasting or swelling the granular starch material to an unacceptable degree by introducing a metered stream of said alkaline solution into a flowing stream of said starch slurry at or near the inlet of an intensive, in-line mixer which completely and homogeneously mixes said streams within a time period of less than 1 second.
