| abstract | Novel (poly) - sulfur carboxylic compounds, their preparation and their use as additives for lubricating oils are described.n n n These carboxylic compounds are more particularly esters corresponding to the general formula: [R³O-CO] q R² {-CO-O- (CH₂-) m CH 3-z [- (CH₂-) n S x -R¹] zp} wherein R¹ is a monovalent, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms; the number x is equal to or greater than; z is equal to 1 or 2 when z = 1, n is an integer from 0 to 5 and m an integer from 0 to 5 with m + n integer from 1 to 10; when z = 2, n is an integer from 1 to 5 and m an integer from 0 to 5, with m + n an integer from 1 to 10, R² is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 51 carbon atoms and of valence p + q; R³ is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms; p is an integer from 1 to 4 and q an integer from 0 to 3, with p + q an integer from 1 to 4.n n n They are obtained by esterification of the carboxylic acid R² (-COOH) p + q with a (poly) sulfurized monoalcohol: [R¹-S x - (CH₂) n -] z CH 3-z - (CH₂-) m OH and optionally an R³OH alcohol. They are used as antiwear and extreme pressure additives in lubricating oils. |
