abstract The invention relates to a binder composition, comprising an alkyd resin and a resin based on an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, which is emulsified in water. The binder composition has a bimodal particle size distribution with large and small particles, the small particles consisting substantially of resin particles based on the ethylenically unsaturated monomer, having a number average particle size of between 40 and 150 nm, and the large particles consisting substantially of particles based on alkyd resin, having a number average particle size of between 150 and 500 nm. n Preferably, a mixture of an acrylate monomer and styrene is used as ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
