A novel nucleic acid fragment used for the overexpression of a high methionine seed storage protein in plants is described. The nucleic acid fragment can transform plants, particularly crop plants, to overexpress a corn seed storage protein in seeds or leaves. The invention is of particular interest with regard to improving the nutritional qualities of plants low in sulfur amino acids, such as corn or soya. Also disclosed are the polypeptide product of the nucleic acid fragments as well as chimeric genes, host cells, plants, seeds and microorganisms containing the nucleic acid fragment. Methods for producing overexpression of seed storage protein in microorganisms are also disclosed. |
