abstract A method and apparatus are described for identifying an unknown gas. An infrared spectrum of the unknown gas is generated. The described embodiment uses an infrared spectrophotometer that includes a circular variable interference filter. The infrared spectrum of the unknown gas is compressed, and compared with a library of compressed infrared spectra of reference compounds.
