abstract An object of the invention is to provide novel liquidncrystalline compounds which 1) exhibit a low threshold voltage,n2) have a low viscosity, 3) maintain or lower dielectricnanisotropy of liquid crystal compositions when added thereto,nand further are excellent in miscibility with other known liquidncrystalline compounds, particularly excellent in the miscibilitynat low temperatures; to provide liquid crystal compositionsncomprising the compound; and to provide liquid crystal displayndevices comprising the composition; and the liquid crystallinencompounds are α, α-difluorobenzyl ether derivatives expressednby the general formula (1)n nwherein R 1 represents a straight chain or branched alkyl groupnhaving 1 to 15 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 15ncarbon atoms one or not-adjacent two or more CH 2 groups in thenalkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by oxygen atom; ring Anand ring B independently represent 1,4-cyclohexylene group onenor more CH 2 groups on the ring may be replaced by oxygen atom ornsulfur atom, or 1,4-phenylene group one or more CH groups on thenring may be replaced by nitrogen atom, and one or more hydrogennatoms on the ring may be replaced by a halogen atom; ring C andnring D independently represent 1,4-phenylene group one or more nhydrogen atoms on the ring may be replaced by a halogen atom; Z 1 ,nZ 2 , and Z 3 independently represent -CH 2 CH 2 -, -CH=CH-, -C≡C-, ornsingle bond; X represents a halogen atom, CF 3 , OCF 3 , OCHF 2 , ornCN; Y represents hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; ℓ and m are 0nor 1; ℓ + m ≦ 1 ; and an element which constitutes the compoundnmay be replaced by its isotope.
