titleOfInvention | Membrane-type reaction vessel |
abstract | A reaction vessel (1) including an oxygen-containingngas chamber (8) separated from a source gas chamber (9) by annoxygen-permeable membrane (3) that allows oxygen selectivelynto pass therethrough to contact and react with source gasncontained in the source gas chamber (9). The ratio of atnleast one of (i) the volume of the oxygen-containing gasnchamber (8) to the total volume of the vessel (1) and (ii) thenvolume of the source gas chamber (9) to the total volume ofnthe vessel (1), is outside a range within which explosionnwould occur if the oxygen-containing gas and source gasnwere allowed to combine directly. Preferably, the rationalso is outside a range within which explosion wouldnoccur if the oxygen-containing gas and products resultingnfrom reactions between oxygen supplied through thenoxygen-permeable membrane and the source gas were allowednto combine directly. The vessel is safer to operate innthat the risk of explosion, due to direct mixing of thengases when the oxygen-permeable membrane (3) is damaged orncracked, is greatly reduced. |
