A system for controlling a series hybrid vehicle, having anninternal combustion engine (10) whose output is regulated by a throttle valven(14), a generator-motor (22) connected to the engine to be rotated by thenengine, an electric energy storage means (26) connected to the firstngenerator-motor to be charged by the first generator-motor, and a secondngenerator-motor (36) connected to at least one of the first generator-motornand the electric energy storage means to input an output of at least one of thenfirst generator-motor and the electric energy storage means to drive wheelsn(28) of the vehicle to propel the vehicle. In the system, a desired enginenspeed is determined to minimize fuel consumption, and a desired powerngeneration amount of the first generator-motor is determined based on andetermined desired power generation based value and the desired enginenspeed. Then, the throttle opening is controlled to achieve the desired powerngeneration amount, thereby optimizing fuel consumption, while rapidlynconverging the engine speed on the desired value, without stalling theninternal combustion engine. |
