Electrolytic process and apparatus for the controlled oxidation or reduction of inorganic and organic species in aqueous solutions |
abstract |
An electrolytic process and apparatus is disclosed fornoxidizing or reducing inorganic and organic species, especially inndilute aqueous solutions. The electrolytic reactor includes annanode and cathode in contact with a packed bed of particulate ionnexchange material which establishes an infinite number of transfernsites in the electrolyte to significantly increase the mobility ofnthe ionic species to be oxidized or reduced toward the anode orncathode, respectively. The ion exchange material is cationic fornoxidation and anionic for reduction, or a combination of both fornspecial circumstances. The ion exchange material isntreated to convert a portion of the transfer sites to semiconductornjunctions which act as mini anodes, or cathodes, to significantlynincrease the capacity of the reactor to oxidize or reduce thenspecies to be treated. Exemplary applications for the disclosednelectrolytic process and apparatus are the conversion of halides tonhalous acids in dilute solutions. |
