abstract A diffraction display device includes a holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal diffraction optical element (9) that comprises a diffraction display portion (30A,B,C) and a non-display portion (24A) disposed between a pair of substrates (20,21), and an illuminating device (10) that emits linearly polarized illuminating light (42A) to be incident on a side surface of the diffraction optical element (9). In the diffraction display device, the illuminating light having entered the diffraction optical element exits the diffraction optical element through a substrate surface at which the diffraction display portion is disposed.
