The invention relates to a polymeric composition comprising a polyurethane polymer derived from a polyisocyanate compound and a polyactive hydrogen compound, said polyurethane having an effective amount of covalently bound, antimicrobially active ammonium groups pendant to the polyurethane polymer as a side chain along the polyurethane polymer backbone, wherein the antimicrohially active ammonium group is derived from a compound of the formula (I): n[CH 3 (CH 2 ) x ] q N (R 4 ) m -(CH 2 ) z LH Q (I) nwherein: nm is 1 or 2; nq = 1 or 2 provided that m+q = 3; nx is 6 to 20; nz is 2 to 10; nL is O, S, NR 5 or NH; where R 5 is C 1-4 alkyl or benzyl; neach R 4 is independently C 1-4 alkyl, phenyl or C 6-8 aralkyl; and nQ is halogen, alkyl sulfate, carboxylate, sulfonate, sulfate, phosphonate or phosphate. |
