The invention relates to a microorganism for producing human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) which can be used, for example, as functional ingredients in infant feeding, medical nutrition, functional foods and animal feed. There is still a need to improve the means of production of HMO. The present invention relates to genetically modified microorganisms for improved production of HMOs, and methods for producing HMOs using them. The microorganisms of the invention may have one or more yield-enhancing modifications, including an inducible lysis system, which facilitates the extraction of intracellular and extracellular HMOs, mutants of lactose permease, which can increase intracellular lactose levels, or chaperones, that may increase the intracellular availability of key enzymes for HMO production. |
