A method for the production of a food product for cats or dogs, comprising: a) combining a liquid fat and a dry additive in line along a processing line to form a dry liquid fat-additive composition; b) combining at least one aqueous or fat-immiscible liquid additive with the dry liquid-additive liquid fat composition along the processing line to form a surface coating composition; c) coating the outer surface of a cat or dog food material with the surface coating composition along the processing line; wherein the dry additive is selected from the group consisting of probiotic microorganisms, tartar control additives, meat solids, dry animal digestive products, yeast, antibiotics, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, carotenoids, lutein, bioflavonoids, products or natural or organic fermentation extracts, microbial growth inhibitors, and mixtures thereof. |
