abstract | A method for producing cis-1,4-polydienes, a method comprising the steps of: contacting the conjugated diene monomer with a lanthanide-based catalyst system to form a polymer, wherein said contacting step takes place in a bulk polymerization system wherein the monomer serves as a diluent and the system includes less than 20% by weight of organic solvent based on the total weight of monomer, organic solvent, and resulting polymer, wherein the lanthanide-based catalyst system is the combination of or reaction product of (a) a lanthanide compound, (b) an organoaluminum hydride, (c) a trihydrocarbylaluminum, and (d) a halogen-containing compound, where the conjugated diene monomer is 1, 3-butadiene, thus forming cis-1,4-polybutadiene, characterized in that the molar ratio of organoaluminum hydride to trihydrocarbylaluminum is from 15:85 to 40:60. |
