abstract A method of identifying the characteristics of a marking object comprising the steps of: providing a marked article (105) having a surface having marks caused by a marking surface of the marking object, wherein the marking object is a firearm; wherein the marking surface comprises one selected from a firing pin, an ejection pin, a face of the butt, a breech and the inner wall of the barrel of the firearm and the marked object comprises one selected from a socket or portion thereof, a replica of a casing or portion thereof, a bullet, a portion of a bullet and a replica of a surface of a bullet or portion thereof; characterized by: obtaining a 3D data set corresponding to a 3D virtual model of a 3D surface topology of the marked article (105) by means of a sensor; extracting from the data set by means of a surface segmentation analysis the data indicative of a class of the marking object and storing said data in the database, where the surface segmentation analysis comprises dividing a region of the area in regions consisting of hills and regions consisting of valleys; extract from the data set by means of a surface small wave filtering operation carried out on a characteristic of the one-dimensional signal of the marking object of the marked article, said characteristic of the one-dimensional signal obtained by projecting said surface to the along the direction of a spline turn, a feature profile representing data corresponding to one or more individual characteristics of the marking object and storing said data in the database.
