A method for producing a protein of interest comprising: a) treating a plant or part of a plant to increase the biomass of secondary leaves wherein the treatment comprises increasing the duration of light during plant growth, increasing the intensity of light during plant growth, cultivating the plant in the presence of a hormone, or a combination thereof, to produce a treated plant or part of the plant; b) introducing one or more than one nucleic acid into the treated plant or part of the plant, the nucleic acid comprises a nucleotide sequence that encodes the protein of interest, the nucleotide sequence is operably linked to a regulatory region that is active in the plant; c) incubating the treated plant or part of the plant under conditions that allow the expression of the nucleotide sequence encoding the protein of interest, thus increasing the yield of the protein of interest, compared to the yield of the protein of interest obtained from the plant tissue of a similar plant that is grown under the same conditions, but that has not been treated to increase the biomass of secondary leaves, where the treatment stage, stage a), is carried out from approximately 40 days before stage of introduction, stage b), up to approximately 9 days before the introduction stage, stage b). |
