titleOfInvention | Rotary opening atherectomy device with electric motor control |
abstract | A rotationally openable rotary atherectomy system, comprising: a helically wound elongated flexible drive shaft (20) having a distal end for introduction into a patient's vasculature and having a proximal end opposite the distal end that remains outside the patient's vasculature and has a lumen through it, where: the helical coils of the drive shaft (20) are configured to allow the drive shaft (20) to rotate in a rotationally open direction during high speed rotation, the transmission shaft (20) having a nominal outside diameter and length and a maximum allowable outside diameter limit; a guide (15) adapted to translate and rotate within the lumen of the drive shaft (20) and to allow the drive shaft (20) to translate and rotate on the guide (15); an abrasive crown (28) attached to the drive shaft (20) proximate the distal end of the drive shaft (20); and an electric motor rotatably coupled to the proximal end of the drive shaft (20), the electric motor being capable of rotating the drive shaft (20) in the rotationally open direction, where, when a lock is encountered, the outer diameter of the transmission shaft (20) increases and the length of the transmission shaft (20) decreases; further comprising: a control unit (40) comprising an electronic control system adapted to supervise and control the rotation of the electric motor and the transmission shaft (20) and comprising a maximum limit for the torque applied by the electric motor to the transmission shaft (20), a maximum current limit used by the electric motor and a minimum rotation speed limit for the rotating transmission shaft (20), where the maximum limits of torque, maximum current and / or minimum speed of rotation correspond to the maximum limit for the outer diameter of the transmission shaft (20), where the electronic control system eliminates the power to the electric motor when the maximum limit of the outer diameter of the transmission shaft (20) is reached so that no transfers torque-induced rotation from the electric motor. |
