titleOfInvention A CHAMBER FOR MALTING CEREAL GRAIN.
abstract Partially malted grain in a malting vessel M is progressively loosened for immediate discharge through an outlet 3 by a sweeper arm 33, Fig. 1, which carries a plurality of radially extending helically arranged tines 35 and is connected for rotation to an electric motor 30 through a universal coupling 32, whereby the sweeper arm performs gyrational movements 42 about its mounting as the malted grain in the vessel discharges. A rotating worm carrying tines may be employed instead of the sweeping arm. The partially malted grain thereby loosened is immediately discharged to a separate vessel, the entangled rootlets becoming disentangled by the loosening and discharging prior to continued processing. The malting vessel has a conical perforated partition 2a in which are located air injection nozzles 41b supplied with air from a compressor 41a for agitating the grain. Conditioned air from a conditioning unit 19 is passed into the malting vessel through line 17 or 20. Water is supplied from a reservoir 10 or conduit 26. The temperature at various levels in the malting vessel is determined by a series of thermometers 43. The grain may be steeped in the making vessel at ordinary or elevated (40 C) temperatures. According to the embodiments: (i) partially malted grain is discharged and transferred from a malting vessel (M 1 , (Fig. 2, not shown) into a storage vessel (S 1 ) by a system of conveyors (37, 38, 36) and is then re-transferred to the empty malting vessel (ii) partially malted grain in malting vessel (M 2 ) (Fig. 3, not shown) is transferred into storage vessel (S 2 ), partially malted grain is transferred from malting vessel (M 3 ) into vessel (M 2 ), and then the partially malted grain in storage vessel (S 2 ) is transferred into malting vessel (M 3 ) (iii) a similar procedure is applied in a system of four malting vessels and one storage vessel (Fig. 4, not shown) and (iv) partially malted grain is progressively transferred from one malting vessel to the next in series (M 8 to M 11 ) (Fig. 5, not shown) and the storage vessel (S 4 ) is employed only for the transference involved in circulating grain from and to the same malting vessel. Depths of grain of the order of 13 feet can be handled. The grain may be sprayed with water during its transference. The malted grain is kilned.
