abstract A device for injecting liquid fuel under high pressure into blast or cupola furnaces comprises a tuyerel, a nozzle 9, a fuel conduit 14 terminating in a sprayer 15 and an air blast supply duet D, there being inclined vanes E which produce a gyratory motion to the air blast and a ring of refractory elements 5 between the tuyere and the nozzle. A viewing tube 20 is provided. In a modification the conduit 14 is inclined at almost 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of tuyere and the vanes E surround and support the sprayer 15. In a further embodiment the conduit 14 is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the tuyere and the air blast is supplied tangentially to the nozzle so that the vanes E are not required. The tuyere and the adjacent end of the nozzle are water cooled. Cold air from a supply 3 is fed by oblique slots 7 along the refractory lining 2 of the tuyere. The vanes may be of a refractory steel or ceramic and the lining 11 of the nozzle can be clay or silicoaluminous concrete. A sleeve 17 between the nozzle and tuyere may be composed of more than 95% of alumina, alumino-zirconia or zirconia.
