titleOfInvention Electrolytic polishing of metal articles
abstract Polishing metals, partic. Al or Cu (alloys) and stainless steel, to obtain mirror-like finish, for use in reflectors, mirrors, decorative articles and high vacuum apparatus, takes place by 2-step process: (a) electrolysing in an aqs. electrolyte until desired extent of intercrystalline corrosion has taken place and (b) reversing polarity and eroding metal article surface until desired degree of polishing is achieved. Pref. same electrolyte is used for both steps, and pref. in (a) article is cathode. Pref. 5-150 v, 1-150 A/sq. dm. current density and 20-90 degrees C are used in both steps. Pref. electrolyte contains phosphate ions, and more pref. consists of an aqs. soln. of (i) NaOH and Na3PO4, or pref.(ii) H3PO4, H2SO4 and chromic acid, or pref. (iii) H3PO4, H3SO4 and HNO3 or (iv) H3PO4 and an alcohol, partic. propanol, butanol or glycerol, or pref. the electrolyte contains HNO3 and opt. HF or NH4NO3 and methanol.
