Non-aq. dispersions of thermosetting film-forming polymers useful as decorative and protective coatings for car bodywork are formed by (1) dissolving an alkylated condensate of an amine and an aldehyde in a non-aq. solvent, where the condensate has good tolerance w.r.t. dilution with aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents; (2) admixing the soln. with a first active esp. 12C ethylenic monomer (I) contg. a functional epoxy gp., esp. an epoxy (meth) acrylate, and with a second esp. 12C active ethylenic monomer (II), esp. a (meth)acrylate or acrylonitrile, where both (I) and (II) are free from functional OH gps. and can be easily polymsd. by free radical initiators; and (3) copolymsg. (I) and (II) in presence of the condensate to form a copolymer which is insol. but evenly dispersed in solvent. Highest strength, adhesion and gloss of finished film are obtd. when (I) is 5-40 (10-20) wt.% of (I) + (II). |
