titleOfInvention PREPARATION OF METHYL SILICATE
abstract Process comprises contacting a pulverulent mass, prod. obtd. in the direct synthesis of Me or Ph chlorosilanes, and cont. >=30 wt. % Si, with MeOH in the presence of an alkali methylate as catalyst at atmos. press. and >=100 degrees C in an aromatic hydrocarbon diluent of b.pt. >190 degrees C and m.pt 40 degrees C in an amt. of 31-69 wt. % based on the total liq. reaction medium. The hydrocarbon diluent is pref. a diisopropylbenzene, a triisopropylbenzene, diphenylmethane, 1,1-diphenylethane, alpha- methylnaphthalene or tetraline and is normally present as 32-65 wt. % of the reaction medium. The pulverulent material has pref. a particle dia. of 100 mu and a Si content of >40% wt. The MeOH used is pref. anhydrous, and suitable catalysts are NaOMe and KOMe which may be added in an amt. of 5-15 wt. % based on total reaction medium. The prod. is useful for prodn. of SiO2 by pptn. of combustion, as binders in smelting and as starting materials for organo-silicon resins. The process employs waste unpurified material of little industrial use as starting material contg. useful amts. of Si, which are otherwise lost.
