The invention relates to the manufacture of optical fibers. Glass particles are formed by subjecting raw glass material gas to flame hydrolysis, said particles are deposited on a starting element so that the thickness of the particles increases in the axial direction, the body is sintered thus formed so as to form a cylinder, the cylinder is inserted into a quartz tube so as to form an assembly, the assembly is heated to melt the cylinder and the tube between them and the assembly is pulled into a thin fiber . The cylinder 13 has a refractive index greater than that of an intermediate envelope, and the glass tube forming a jacket 14 surrounds this envelope. The glass fibers according to the invention are produced at a lower cost than in the prior art. |
