abstract A stack (48) of titanium plates (50, 52, 51) is placed on a fixation table (28) in a vacuum chamber (10). One of the mating surfaces of each mating surface pair has an application of mask material, in a desired pattern, to prevent diffusion welding. A pump (16) evacuates the vacuum chamber (10), and heaters (22) heat the stack (18) to evaporate the volatile binder from the mask. When all the binder has been removed, the fixing table (28) is moved relative to an electron beam from a gun (20), to weld together the edges of the plates (50, 52, 51), so as to form a sealed assembly. The volatile binder is removed quickly, and oxidation of titanium is avoided during removal of the binder by baking. The sealed assembly is then heated and placed under external pressure, to diffusion weld the plates together. The integral structure is then heated and internally pressurized, to superplastically form one of the plates, so as to produce an article of predetermined shape.
