Method for marking a leather element, comprising at least the following steps: a) supplying a leather element, comprising collagen chains, having amine functions, b) bringing the leather element into contact with an aromatic aldehyde, and with carbon dioxide under a pressure and a temperature such that carbon dioxide is in the supercritical state or close to the supercritical state, so as to react the aromatic aldehyde with the amine functions of the leather, whereby the leather element is covalently marked by the aromatic aldehyde via imine functions.
